Dr. Chongsuk Ryou, Professor and Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Hanyang University College of Pharmacy, is a leading prion scientist who has carried out research on the molecular basis of prions and prion diseases.
Dr. Ryou received a Ph.D. degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, Michigan. His postdoctoral traning was completed in the University of California San Francisco(UCSF) under the guidance of Dr. Stanley Prusiner, Nobel Laureate (1997). Prior to joining Hanyang University, Dr. Ryou served as a faculty member of the department of Neurology, UCSF and the Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Molecular Genetics, and the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging, University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He also served as an adjunct faculty member of University of Tennessee-Martin Graduate School.
The research interests of Dr. Ryou’s group are prions and related infectious neurodegenerative disorders. In particular, Dr. Ryou is interested in the molecular mechanism of prion replication and translational research to develop anti-prion therapies. His gropu published a number of articles in the top-rated professional journals of the field and is regarded as an internationally-recognized prion research group.
He tearches Molecular Biology and Biochemistry for undergraduate and graduate students in Hanyang University. His professional activity includes publishing research artivles, abstracts, book and book chapters; patenting; giving invited lectures in domestic and foreign academic/research institutions; giving oral presentation in the national and international conferences; moderatingscientific sessions in the conferences as a char; organizing domestic and international conferences; serving as an editor of journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology; and peer-reviewing journal articles and grant proposals to the funding bodies of Korea, the United States, Israel, and the United Kingdom. He also gives advisory opinion and consultation to public and private sectors.
